Click on the image above to view photos of Compass (Ball Cam Performance) or HERE.

Ball Cam is an innovative camera-in-a-ball that Lizzie Sykes invented. She uses the cam in collaboration with dancers to produce a series of highly original dance/video pieces in which the dancers themselves are able to control the camera. These are photos of 'Compass' - a live perfomance event by Olu Tawio and Lizzie Sykes that took place at the exhibition.

Whilst setting up his photographs for exhibition, Phil Allen tells me a little more about the life stories of the Muay Thai fighters in his photographic project ‘Sakprasert’ and his emotional reactions to carrying out a three-year body of work on a sport his pacifist self didn't much care for initially.

Lizzie articulates the feelings her film Pen Pynfarch evokes in her as film-maker.

ARTIST STATEMENT

At the core of my work is the moving image. Other dynamic forms I work with are dance, landscape and recently sound... combined with video. I love the concept of cameras. The physical, immediate, sometimes playful nature of the work means that now and then I need to create cameras, or bits of cameras, to achieve the response in myself and an audience that I’m looking for.

ARTIST STATEMENT

Every time we make a decision, we choose a path from a vast range of possibilities. As we follow our path so it interacts with those of others. Imagine the shapes we would see if the paths we followed were made visible. Scientists would make maps representing these routes to analyse them. I do it for aesthetic purposes, to celebrate its complexity and simplicity, its messiness, ...</description>
