The Salon is an art collective exploring traditional and new media. We're an informal group of artists and media practitioners, experimenting with, and facilitating, community arts around Dorset, UK. The Salon began as a regular informal gathering of media practioners and artists from The Media School at Bournemouth University, The Arts University College at Bournemouth, The University of Winchester, Bournemouth & Poole College, and the local communities. Our objective is to bring our work out of academic enclosures (presentations, workshops, lectures, seminars) and into public community spaces and participate in the regeneration of community arts and culture in Dorset. The Salon is supported by NCCA (National Centre for Computer Animation), IMCR (Institute of Media and Communication Research) and SCAN.

salon.doc is the online network for our collective, a space where we document and critique our projects and communicate remotely with one another.

FIRST SALON EXHIBITION
KUBE
Our first exhibition took place at Kube (formerly The Study Gallery of Modern Art), Poole (04-08 Nov '08). It exhibited work by various members of the collective, including Lizzie Sykes, Peter Hardie, Stephen Bell, Susan Sloan, Olu Tawio, Phil Allen, Rod Lewis and others. View Lizzie Sykes' curatorial overview of The Salon exhibition by clicking here.

As part of this first exhibition, Cláudia Gabriela Marques Vieira ( FuturePresent ) coordinated an in situ documentary of the show as it progressed. Visitors could participate in the exhibition by contributing to this cross-platform documentary as it evolved, by uploading their own documents of the exhibition - the creations the exhibition inspired (thoughts, ideas, photos, videos, drawings...).
