Artist Interview: Phil Allen [video document] Empty Artist Interview: Phil Allen [video document]

Post  claudia Tue Nov 04, 2008 5:12 pm

Whilst setting up his photographs for exhibition, Phil Allen tells me a little more about the life stories of the Muay Thai fighters in his photographic project ‘Sakprasert’ and his emotional reactions to carrying out a three-year body of work on a sport his pacifist self didn't much care for initially.

ARTIST STATEMENT
‘Sakprasert’ is a formative developmental body of work constituting the introductory phase of a three year project aiming to capture, distil and communicate the countless hours of discipline, sweat and effort a local group of Muay Thai fighters devote and expend as they train for a few timeless minutes in the ring. Inspired by the works of Martin Parr and Eamonn McCabe, Phil has thus far been focusing on developing means to capture localised detail alongside actions occurring amidst looser scenes. The work is shot using a digital SLR camera.

Artist Interview: Phil Allen [video document] Empty phil's interview

For me, this interview is completely fascinating, in terms of the back story of the subject matter as well as Phil's experience photographing them. It's hard to believe this work represents the first stages of a project. Blimey.
