Artist Interview: Olu Taiwo [video document]

Olu Taiwo chats about his exhibition piece '€˜The 5th Cardinal point'€™ and his live performance of 'Compass', taking place at 5:30 pm on 6 Nov in the gallery.

ARTIST STATEMENT
Dr Olu Taiwo’s main aim is to propagate 21st century issues concerning the interaction between body and technology. Currently my research is based on the conceptual notion of both the ‘return beat’ (West African rhythmic sensibility), and the ‘physical journal’ (Kinesthetic knowledge, memory and identity within the performer’s body). Projects include Generous Avatar a performative installation. Also collaborating as interactive performer in Prof. Johannes Birringer’s Suna No Onna; he is currently working on the 5th Cardinal point a performative installation and Harmonious interruptions a dance piece with ACE Dance Company.

The 5th Cardinal point is performative installation consisting of 10 diamond Aces at 10 places with a brochure that provides a key to the coded images, diagrams and numbers. Each place has a proverb, a colour, a number and a posture that has been subjectively linked to the person’s physical journal. This temporary scheme represents a personal study into the ‘potential’ for ‘chance’ to create personal meaning for a potential viewer.
